There was once a dharma master named Master Fo Yin who lived in China. Master Fo Yin had a friend. His name was Su Dong Po. Su Dong Po was known as “the infamous poet” because he was rude, direct, and abrasive.
One day, the poet sat down and tried to look like Buddha. He sat up straight, crossed his legs, and placed his hands in a mudra.
He asked the dharma master, “Who do I look like?”
“You look like the Buddha,” answered Master Fo Yin.
The poet then said, “Do you know what you look like? You look like a pile of shit!”
The dharma master simply smiled. No trace of anger appeared on his face.
The poet became confused and disturbed. “How come you are not angry?!?”
Master Fo Yin replied, “For a person who has experienced his Buddha nature, he sees the Buddha nature in everyone. For a person who is full of shit, he sees everybody as a pile of shit.”
